ARTIST STATEMENT: The basis of all my work explores the inextricable relationship between colour and light and finding the essence of things. From everyday objects to Cityscapes. Although colour has been discussed by scientists, philosophers and artists, it is usually regarded as purely decorative and only there for aesthetic reasons. Recently I am influenced by the work of the artist Donald Judd shown at Tate Modern. He too saw colour as one of the most central aspects of his work, and describes colour as being even more powerful than form: Material, space, colour are the main visual aspects of visual art. Everyone knows that there is material that can be picked up and sold, but noone sees space and colour. Two of the main aspects of art are invisible. (from Donald Judd - Colourist by William C. Agge).
With my project called Colourworks, I am exploring the effect of light on colour creating simple decorative surfaces. I am interested in how getting the minimal detail of a simple object like paper can metamorphosis the form into say an abstract landscape or construction, transforming it into its own image and not related to it's original form. Becoming purely an expression of colour. Leading to questions about our psychological, emotional response to colour. As well as colour and the material the photograph is made of, the space it inhabits is important to me.
